Hi, I'm teacher Loren, and I love to talk about culture for my students during classes.
Brazil and the USA are two countries with rich cultures and diverse traditions. Both countries have a variety of holidays and celebrations that are observed throughout the year. While some of these holidays are similar, there are also many that are unique to each country.
Holidays and Celebrations in Brazil
Brazil is a predominantly Catholic country, so many of its holidays are based on the Catholic calendar. The most important holiday in Brazil is Carnival, a week-long celebration that takes place in February or March. Carnival is a time for parades, music, dancing, and food. Other important holidays in Brazil include:
New Year's Day (January 1)
Tiradentes' Day (April 21)
Labor Day (May 1)
Independence Day (September 7)
Our Lady of Aparecida's Day (October 12)
All Souls' Day (November 2)
Christmas Day (December 25)
Holidays and Celebrations in the USA
The USA is a more secular country than Brazil, so its holidays are not as closely tied to religion. The most important holiday in the USA is Christmas Day, which is celebrated on December 25. Other important holidays in the USA include:
New Year's Day (January 1)
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (Third Monday in January)
Presidents' Day (Third Monday in February)
Memorial Day (Last Monday in May)
Independence Day (July 4)
Labor Day (First Monday in September)
Columbus Day (Second Monday in October)
Veterans Day (November 11)
Thanksgiving Day (Fourth Thursday in November)
Similarities and Differences
There are some similarities between the holidays and celebrations in Brazil and the USA. For example, both countries celebrate New Year's Day and Christmas Day. However, there are also many differences. For example, Brazil celebrates Carnival, while the USA does not. The USA celebrates Thanksgiving Day, while Brazil does not.
