Hi, I'm teacher Loren. English is full of colorful idioms, and those involving the human body are some of the most common and vivid. Here are 7 to get you started:
Play it by ear: This idiom means to improvise or be spontaneous. You don't have a plan, so you'll just have to see how things go as they happen.
"We don't have a schedule for the trip, so we'll just play it by ear and see where the day takes us."
Stick your neck out: This means to take a risk. You're putting yourself in a vulnerable position by doing something that could have negative consequences.
"I'm sticking my neck out by defending her, but I believe she's innocent."
Step on someone's toes: This idiom means to upset someone by getting involved in something that is their responsibility.
"I didn't mean to step on your toes, but I thought I could help with the project."
In a blink of an eye: This means extremely quickly. Something that happens in the blink of an eye happens very suddenly and unexpectedly.
"The magician made the rabbit disappear in a blink of an eye."
The bee's knees: This is an old-fashioned way of saying that something is very good.
"That new restaurant is the bee's knees! The food is amazing."
I'm all ears: This idiom means that you are eager to listen to what someone has to say. You are paying close attention and are ready to hear their message.
"I'm having some trouble with my computer. I'm all ears if you have any advice."
Blue in the face: This idiom describes someone who is exhausted as a result of unsuccessful effort. They may have been trying to convince someone of something, but they were unsuccessful.
"I argued with him until I was blue in the face, but he still wouldn't listen."
